Somchai Phattanapitoon
Retired banker, Bangkok
I attended the Investing Apprenticeship after thirty years in banking, thinking I probably knew most of it. I didn't. The session on fund structures — how a unit trust actually functions, what the prospectus is actually saying — clarified things I had absorbed imprecisely over a long career. The learning journal was the unexpected part. Writing between sessions made the reading stick in a way it otherwise wouldn't have.

Margaret Hargreaves
British expatriate, Bangkok (12 years)
The tax companion was what I needed, and the expatriate section was the main reason I came. The remittance rule had always confused me — it's quite a specific thing and most explanations online are either too vague or too technical to be helpful. Richard walked through it clearly, with examples that actually applied to someone in my situation. I left with the reference card and it's been useful since.

Nakhon Teerawut
Architect, Chiang Mai
I came to Conversations on Inheritance without a clear idea of what I wanted from it. My wife and I had been putting off the will conversation for a few years, and I thought perhaps a structured context would help. The first session — on the documents themselves — was useful on its own. The second session was the more interesting one. It provided a kind of language for conversations we hadn't known how to start.

Andréa Vosburgh
Canadian, Director of operations, Bangkok
I was initially uncertain whether an in-person programme was worth travelling for. I'm glad I did. The group was small enough that the facilitator genuinely knew where everyone was in their understanding. There was no pretence that we all had the same starting point. I've since attended the inheritance programme as well and found it similarly well-run.

Pranee Wongsuwan
Business owner, Bangkok
I run a small business and manage my personal accounts separately. Tax had always been something I handed entirely to my accountant. After the Tax Companion, I started to understand what she was telling me — and I could ask better questions. The programme didn't replace her, but it made our relationship more productive. That was the practical outcome I was looking for.

David Suthers
Australian, Semi-retired, Hua Hin
My wife is Thai and we hold property in her name, as is common. The inheritance weekend addressed exactly the kind of situation we're in — property transfer considerations, beneficiary nominations, what happens when the arrangements involve two nationalities. Nattaporn was clearly experienced with these situations and didn't treat them as unusual edge cases, which they aren't in Bangkok.

Three Participant Journeys in More Detail

From tax confusion to productive conversations with an adviser
The Situation
A Thai national in her early fifties, managing personal savings alongside a small rental property income. She had always filed taxes through an accountant but had little understanding of what was being filed or whether all applicable deductions were being claimed on her behalf.
The Programme
She attended the Thai Tax Companion over three sessions in January 2025. By the second session, she had identified two deductions — for life insurance premiums and for provident fund contributions — that she had never thought to raise with her accountant.
The Result
She subsequently had a more detailed conversation with her accountant and confirmed that both deductions were applicable to her situation. Her assessment was adjusted accordingly. She described the programme as having paid for itself in that first year.
"I didn't know what I didn't know. That turns out to be quite a lot."
A four-month introduction to investing — without being sold anything
The Situation
A British expatriate in his late forties, working in logistics. He had savings but had avoided investing because he found the subject confusing and the available advice felt like it came with strings attached. He was not looking to be told what to buy — he wanted to understand the landscape.
The Programme
He joined the Investing Apprenticeship in October 2024. By the second session, on risk and time horizon, he described a shift in how he thought about the choices he had in front of him. The learning journal gave him a way to record questions that he found genuinely answered in the following meeting.
The Result
By the end of the programme, he had sufficient understanding to have a purposeful conversation with an independent financial adviser he had chosen separately. He knew enough to evaluate what was being suggested rather than simply accepting it.
"Four months sounds long. In practice it was four Saturdays spread out sensibly. The spacing made it work."
A weekend that opened a conversation a family had been avoiding for years
The Situation
A Thai-Danish couple in their fifties. Property held jointly. They had agreed, in principle, that they needed to formalise their inheritance arrangements, but had not made progress because the conversations led quickly into territory that felt uncomfortable and they lacked a framework for it.
The Programme
They attended Conversations on Inheritance together over a single weekend in February 2025. The first session — on wills and property transfer — gave them a shared vocabulary. The second session offered a more reflective space that they found easier to participate in than they had expected.
The Result
Within six weeks of the programme, they had met with a Thai lawyer and updated their wills. Both described the weekend as having removed a practical and emotional blockage that had persisted for several years.
"We needed a way to start the conversation that didn't feel too close to home. This was it."
